イギリスでは現在も安定した人気を誇るロックバンド Marillion が1995年にリリースしたアルバム Afraid of Sunlight に収録された、美しいメロディとシンプルなメッセージが素敵な曲です。

Marillionの音楽性というのは、初期はポンプロックなどと言われ、Genesisに影響を受けたプログレッシブロックの要素を持ったサウンドでしたが、本質としてはオーソドックスなブリティッシュロックバンドです。コンセプトアルバムや演奏時間が長い曲でも、奇をてらったようなアレンジの作品を作るわけでなく、丁寧に重厚なサウンドを作り上げていて、安心して聴けるというところが長い期間活動を続けられる秘訣なのだろうと思います。
あとは歌詞。プログレバンドにありがちな難解な内容や、お伽噺のような内容は避け、多くの曲で現実社会に向けたメッセージを書いている点が、リスナーに受け入れられているのではないかと考えます。（事実、彼らの最新アルバム An Hour Before It's Dark もイギリスのチャートで2位を記録したとのことで、ある意味国民的バンド的立ち位置なんですね・・・）
この曲「Beautiful」も「この世界は誰もが美しく、蔑まれるようなことはない。本当に美しいものが見極められるような世界にしよう」というメッセージが込められています。（以下の歌詞はMarillionのオフィシャルウエブサイトから引用）
